Miguel Cabrera's DUI
This blog talks about Detroit Tiger and five time all-star Miguel Cabrera's DUI he received on Wednesday, February 16th. Cabrera also has had a history of domestic disputes with his wife, and ran in to trouble with alcohol in 2009. He was so drunk the weekend before the Tigers were trying to clinch the AL Central title that he had to apologize to them before their next game. Although his manager has beens sticking up for him, does he deserve to be let off the hook? Or should he be considered a threat and should this incident be looked at with more concern?

The problem with famous athletes today is that many of them act as though the are above the law and can get away with anything that they want. Yes, they are under a lot of pressure, but that's they're job. They get paid millions of dollars to deal with this pressure and perform. Additionally, they're paid this much to take care of their bodies. Drinking before a game of that importance is completely unacceptable for that kind of professional. And that's just because of his duties to his team and franchise. More than that, getting a DUI is a serious matter. That's not something that anyone, even athletes, should not be able to just walk away from without any consequences. Cabrera needs to accept the consequences for his actions and tone down his ego a bit before being considered for a second chance.
ReplyDeleteI think that since alcohol has been an ongoing problem with Cabrera, this incident should be looked at with more concern. This is his job. A person wouldn't be able to show up to the office completely hammered without punishment. Also, it says he has had a problem with alcohol since 2009. I feel that he has been given way too many chances already and it is time that he should face the consequences of his actions.
ReplyDeleteAs a famous athlete, Cabrera has a powerful influence on the public. People will look at the behavior of whom they admire. What Cabrera did just let the public down. The DUI is such a serous problem. Moreover, this is not the first time he fell into this situation. He has been reported that he has had a history of domestic disputes with his wife, and ran in to trouble with alcohol in 2009. Whether he should get a second chance depends on how he would do in the future. If he promise that the DUI thing would never be happen and maybe we can give him a chance. It is an ethical dilemma about the talent athlete and the social effect of the bad behavior he did.
ReplyDeleteIt has become something of an ongoing theme that athletes should be held to a higher standard than most citizens. When one receives, in this case, a DUI, we immiedately question their ability to perform on the field.
ReplyDeleteIt was clearly stated that this occurred the weekend before the game, plenty of time for it to leave his system and be ready for the game. This is entirely different than him drinking in excess the night before the game.
Addressing the DUI charge, he is guilty of the crime thus he must be held to the fullest extent of the law for it. If it is an ongoing issue then considerion for mandatory cleanse, AA meetings, the whole package.Considering athletes make top dollar, there's no excuse for these aids not to be taken advantage of.
As a side note, it's irrelevant to bring up his personal life, in particular the domestic disputes. It has little to nothing to do with the current situation.
Many celebrities in the spotlight want more attention. With the amount of money that they make, they feel that then can test the limits to what they can an cannot do legally. Money can definitely change the situation when someone's money or job is on the line. Managers will side with the money. It is as if money can buy a person out of trouble. The media loves stories on celebrities because it brings in more money to the company. Eventually his drinking will catch up with him when it causes him to lose jobs and money, but until something causes that, many incidents can be paid off. Second chances are tough to come by when money, jobs, and reputations of others are in jeopardy.
ReplyDeleteEveryone should be held to the same standards as far as following the law is concerned. Someone does not deserve a break just because he or she is famous or plays a sport professionally. Even though it is easier for the team's manager and owner to sweep Cabrera's misdeeds under the rug, it would be better for them to confront the issue with him so that they can insure a similar incident does not happen again. Once a player's behavior reaches the seriousness of a DUI or suspected domestic abuse, he should no longer have the privelege of playing Major League baseball. While I realize that team personnel does not think the same way, Cabrera must be threatened with his release from the team or some similar consequence if he has any other run-ins with the law.
ReplyDeletePersonally I’m tired of hearing about adultery and DUIs. I feel as if it’s not really any of our business to judge these sports players, celebrities, and politicians, when we get convicted of the same things as them. Let Cabrera worry about if he should be let off the hook and put more effort into make yourself a better person.
ReplyDeleteI think that he needs some kind of consequence, but the reality is that he is under a contract and he is still going to get paid in the short term no matter what. However, I think that athletes need to face consequences just like anyone else. Someone with DUI's and multiple run in's with the law would not get a good job because of that most likely. So, athletes should be treated with the same seriousness. Kids look up to athletes and other famous public figures, and whether athletes think it is fair or not, it's the truth and they need to deal with that responsibility. So, I think that he should face some consequences and make an effort to change, then he deserves a second chance.
ReplyDeleteI do not think Cabrera should get a second chance, simply because I have zero respect for people who drink and drive. I don’t think it is fair that he can put so many people’s lives at risk by being so careless, and essentially get no more than a slap on the wrist. It floors me that his manager can, without hesitation, brush of Cabrera’s actions. He is a professional athlete, not a God, and he should be treated just like anyone else would who commits a crime or gets in trouble with alcohol. I also have no respect for people who have domestic abuse charges in their record. Cabrera obviously can’t handle himself off the field, so he shouldn’t be allowed back on it. Letting him get away with these things could show other people that what he’s doing is acceptable and not a big deal, even though it really is.
ReplyDeleteI think he should be considered a threat and this incident should be looked at with more concern because that he knew Tigers had events to do next weekend, however he still let himself stuck in drunk issue, which is a behavior of lacking responsbility and this should be concercend as a big deal. Imagine that, how could you easily trust a person who lacks sense of responsibility.
ReplyDeleteMiguel Cabrera needs to learn responsibility. Examples of his immature behavior are shown through his repeated abuse of alcohol. Though everyone deserves a second chance, they must earn it. He might earn it through joining an alcoholic counseling program, and by proving to the public that he has changed. If nothing is done, who is to say that he will not do the same thing again? By driving under the influence, he represents a great danger to himself as well as other individuals.
ReplyDeleteThough Miguel Cabrera deals with a lot pressure as a public figure, he should not release his pressure in such way: being an alcoholic, disputing with his wife, DUI and so on. Actually, he should become a role model for the public, but he didn't. Can he still deserve a second chance, even he is an excellent athlete who can make great contribution to his team and even to the United State? I don't think so. An excellent athlete should not only be good in doing his job, but also be good at setting a good example for the followers.
ReplyDeleteMiguel Cabrera definitely has a drinking problem. Since this issue has occurred numerous times and he is still not changing his habits, this issue should be looked at with more concern. Just because he is a world famous athlete, doesn't mean he should be let off the hook over and over again. His drinking has even affected his baseball career in the past so his coach should make him enroll in some type of rehab. I realize he is a grown man and doesn't have to listen to anybody else, but DUI's are a serious offense. By drinking and driving, he can harm himself and other innocent people on the road. Also, when his baseball career is over one day, nothing will be stopping him from going out and drinking everyday unless he makes changes in his life now.
ReplyDeleteIt is clear that Miguel Cabrera is no stranger to being in trouble with the law. I think it is time that he is punished, and then maybe he will learn his lesson. Until a proper punishment, like not being able to play baseball is enforced, Cabrera will continue to break the rules. Cabrera needs to stop endangering his life, and other people's lives. Change needs to be enforced in Cabrera's life before it is too late.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to high profile people, especially people who are role models to others, these people need to be careful with their actions. Cabrera needs to wake up and realize that people follow his every action and these actions are going to be viewed and judged, especially bad decisions. When you are a role model to many people, smoking, drinking, and driving drunk are not things that you should be doing. This gives bad ideas to young teens and children who look up to him. When you make 20 million dollars a year for playing a sport you shouldn't do anything to jeopardize the unbelievebal opportunity you have. Overall I feel like if Cabrera messes up again, I don't think he deserves a second chance.
ReplyDeleteI feel like Cabrera has had enough chances. I think everyone does deserve a second chance, but not 5 or 6. It seems that he has had a histroy of breaking the rules of his team and even the law. I think that maybe he has reached his limit of "redo's" He should be kicked of the team.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Cabrera has had enough second chances. Alcohol and drug misuse are one thing, but one someone chooses to drink and drive they are endangering others lives as well. What Cabrera does on his own time is none of my business, and I don't have a problem with it, but as soon as he gets behind a wheel of a vehicle its no longer just his own life that they can destroy.
ReplyDeleteCabrera should not be given a second chance if he has a history of problems with drinking and domestic disputes. I feel that no matter the skill of a player, if he is not worth a second chance for his character, then he should not be given the chance at redemption unless he aims to fix his past mistakes.
